Title:

Louis Newman papers, 1915-1972

Creator/Contributor:

Newman, Louis I. (Louis Israel), 1893-1972, creator

Abstract:

Correspondence; photographs; periodicals and bulletins; brochures; fliers; sermons (1967-1968); memorials; papers about the Palestine Mandate; and other writings. Some of the photographs are of the exterior and interior of San Francisco's Congregation Emanu-El and of Rabbis Louis Newman and Martin A. Meyer, Cantor Reuben Rinder, and Mrs. Hannah Gerstle. The collection's letters reveal Newman's ideals and his opinions about the rabbinate, Judaism, and culture, and contain gossip and information about San Francisco Bay Area citizens and rabbis. The letters also provide some insight into the character of Newman and Martin Meyer. Also has letters from Nahum Sokolow; W. Ormsby-Gore; Julian Mack; Chaim Weizmann; and Rabbis Stephen S. Wise, Rudolph Coffee, and Edgar Magnin; together with a copy of Newman's doctoral thesis for Columbia (1924), published as "The Jewish Influence on Christian Reform Movements" (1925); a report on the 1928 Emanu-El production of "The Dybbuk"; an article about Toby Rosenthal and Rabbis Julius Eckman, Elkan Cohn, and Henry A. Henry; and a copy of Newman's memorial eulogy for Meyer. It also has correspondence from Palestine of members of various Zionist agencies and of individuals who implemented the British Mandate (1920); preliminary and final drafts of the Palestine Mandate; and an account of the United Nations Partition Decision on Palestine (1947).
